GRIET was founded in 1997 under the sponsorship of the Gokaraju Rangaraju Educational Society, which was founded by Dr. Gokaraju Ganga Raju, the chairman of GRIET. GRIET is located on an eighteen-acre campus in Bachupally hamlet, along the Hyderabad-Mumbai National Highway and four km from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in Kukatpally, Hyderabad. The college is located on a magnificent green hillside property. The property has two lecture halls, an open-air theatre, and an auditorium.
It has four major blocks:
The Shannon Block, often known as Block 1, houses the School of Computing Technologies. Faraday Block, also known as Block 2, houses the School of Electrical Sciences. Ramanujan Block, or the New Block, houses Administration. Block 4 houses the School of Mechanical Engineering.
